Advantages of having a vegetable garden at home

There are many advantages of having a vegetable garden at home, the first one of them is the contact with the earth, and I feel like my energy has been gotten renewed, I believe that activity is very delightfulness and therapeutic.

When we cultivate our own food, we are sure that are consuming fresh vegetable and without pesticide. Besides avoiding waste because we harvest just what we get eating.

I live at a house and I have the privilege to get space to plant many greeneries and vegetables, but if it is not your case, do a vegetable garden of spices, that are easy to take care of and much aromatic. You might have some parsley, basil, rosemary, chives, among many others, besides having these wonders at hand, they get beautiful in smalls pots. And something tells me that you will like so much that experience that you will get finding more space to wide your vegetable garden.

Look at how it is my vegetable garden here at home:

How to do a vegetable garden at home

Any small corner in your kitchen, balcony, or gourmet area can turn into a vegetable garden, and the tip that I have given you on the post about terrace’s decoration, also is useful for this case: if you do not have a lot of space, use pots at the wall and make a vertical vegetable garden or even aerial. The most important is that the place receives around four hours of sunshine daily, thereby your vegetable garden will grow up strong and beautiful.

How to prepare the vase to the vegetable Garden

Choose a vase approximately one span in height (about 20 cm), and with a hole on the bottom part to leak the excess water.

  • Put a layer of expanded clay small balls in the bottom of the vase, they are spongy and will help in the drainage, besides being a kind of reservation of water to plants.
  • In the sequence cover with a membrane of drainage to avoid the earth gets away with the water.
  • It is time to add earth, buy that which is specific to the vegetable garden, and already comes with the organic substrate, with hummus for instance. This is soft earth, too dark and a little humid. Do not forget to get a space for the seedlings.
  • Place the seedling, complete with earth and watering that. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal attacks.
  • You may cover the earth of the por with straws or pine bark, this will hold humidity, keep the plant protected from the strong winds, avoid plagues, as well as get visually more beautiful.

All these materials (expanded clay, membrane of drainage, earth with organic substrate, and pine barks) you find easily in gardening stores.

Important tip by Lu:there are many options of plant pots in the marketplace, be alert just for not to use those which are impermeable (usually made of clay with the inside painted black), as this product is made from petroleum and can contaminate your food.

Doing the vegetable Garden from the seed

You may also start your vegetable garden from the seeds, those which are sold in an envelope, do you know? It has even in the market. Guy, a small envelope gets a lot of productivity, after all, each little seed will turn into a plant.

I think it delightful to cultivate since the seed, get accompanying the development of the greenery, until the time to harvest and eat. People, it is a very good sensation.

For this, you will need to create a mini-greenhouse, it enough to re-use the plastic packing that comes with the bakery cake, those small transparent trays that get closet, do you know?

  • Place earth in the bottom of the packing;
  • Spread some seeds spacely;
  • Cover with a thin layer of earth;
  • Sprinkle water on the earth to humid, do not flood!
  • Close the packing and leave it in a place with a lot of natural light, to germinate. In this step, do not put it in the sun.

It is not also necessary to watering, the closed packing with the humid earth is everything the seed needs. After a week, it will start appearing the first small leaves!

When the vegetable reaches around 2 cm height, it is time to re-plant in the vase, in the form I have written above on “How to prepare the vase to the vegetable garden”.

If it is lettuce, for example, between 30 and 30 days, you may already harvest it.

How to take care of your vegetable Garden

Neither water a lot nor leave your vegetable garden thirstiness. The ideal quantity of water depends on the climate, air humidity, and kind of vegetable. I have a “master trick” to know when I should water my vegetable garden. I put a finger into the earth, if it gets out clean, means that plant needs water.

Sometimes it is important to fertilize your vegetable garden, when going to buy it, choose organic fertilizers to guarantee you and your family will not ingest any pesticide.

There are some recipes of homemade fertilizers, done by banana peel, eggshell, coffee grounds, that, besides natural, you will re-use the waste of foods that you would throw away the trash. Awesome, is not it?

I wish this post can inspire you to create a little vegetable garden there in your home, even at least being just to cultivate spices. You will see how delightful going to our own vegetable garden to get our own chives that we will use in the recipes. But you must consume! Because the vegetable life is short, if they do not go to the plate, they will die.

In case you can not manage to eat everything you produce; do you know what to do? Share the excess with your friend, neighbors, thereby you will spread health and love to everyone around you.

Now, it is your turn, tell me… Did you excite yourself with the idea of having a vegetable garden at home?

Kisses
